Javier Herrera

Herrera is out for the season with a torn elbow ligament. Can anybody remember prospect news that matches the complete and utter crappiness of this one? Powell's knee? Nowhere close. Maybe Meyer's shoulder if we knew just how bad it was last spring, but we never really got 'news'. Jairo's name and age change are nowhere close.

Herrera is still young obviously, so this doesn't crush him, but it sure doesn't help. Hopefully Richie Robnett can emerge this season and soften this blow.

Dan Meyer

Friday afternoon Dan Meyer made his 2006 debut (not counting a couple innings vs South Africa)

2 innings, 2 earned, 2 hits, 1 walk, 3 k's

Now, 2 innings is about as small a sample size as there can be, but does anyone remember Meyer last season? By my memory he had 1 game the entire season that saw him have as many or more K's than innings pitched. Last spring, when his shoulder trouble first started, he pitched 20 innings and had just 7 K's all spring.

I found Friday to be a very good sign for Meyer, even if it was just 2 innings.

Miguel Cabrera

Rumor has it that the Marlins would be willing to deal Miguel Cabrera if the right offer came along. So I'm wondering, what exactly would you guys give up for the young superstar? Personally, I'd give them Nick Swisher, Daric Barton and Santiago Casilla (The Athletic formally known as Jairo Garcia). If the A's were going to move Barton back behind the plate I might not pull the trigger there, but as a 1B he simply shouldn't be someone that stops you from getting one of the better players in baseball. If you could put out this lineup;

Ellis
Bradley
Cabrera
Chavez
Thomas
Crosby
Johnson
Kotsay
Kendall

you simply cannot pass the offer up, especially with Cabrera under contract for 4 more years. Don't get me wrong, I love Daric Barton and I love Nick Swisher, but the A's would clearly be the best team in baseball with Miguel Cabrera in left.

Thoughts?
