Tidbits from BA

11. Daric Barton, 1b, Athletics (Double-A Midland) Barton's 0-for-4 showing Monday night marked the first time in over a month that he didn't reach base in a game. So far at Double-A, Barton is 12-for-24 with runners on base.

13. Kevin Melillo, 2b, Athletics (High Class A Stockton) In 13 games since his promotion to the California League, Melillo has hit .414 with six home runs, 14 runs scored and 13 RBIs. He has extended his hitting streak to 25 games, which includes his last two weeks in low Class A.

In The Team Photo

Dallas Braden, lhp, Athletics (Double-A Midland)

Russ (Grass Valley, CA): Jim, Thanks for taking my question. Andre Either, legit prospect or just a guy having a great year? Also, do the A's have any chance in signing Justin Smoak?

Jim Callis: (3:10 PM ET ) For Ethier, he's in between. He got off to a great start but has cooled off somewhat. Could be a big league regular but I don't see him as a star. Sounds like a Smoak deal could happen late in the summer. [update] Dan Meyer also had a good, but uneven game last night. 5+ 10hits, and only 1ER

Kane County grades. TNIP below

Javier Herrera - .285/.382/.440 in 230 AB's. 12 doubles, 2 triples, 7 HR's, 31 walks, 69 k's between Kane County and Sacramento - Herrera has had a decent sized drop in power which is worriesome after his steroid suspension. Still, he's had a decent year considering he's 20 in his chance at full season ball. I was hoping the A's would have kept him up in Sacramento as long as he kept hitting. His value as a 20 year old crushing AAA pitching would have been infinite. Herrera is still to far away to predict his future. Grade: B-

Kevin Melillo - .302/.420/.479 in 314 AB's. 21 doubles, 3 triples, 12 HR's, 56 walks, 46 k's between Kane County and Stockton - Melillo has done very well, but he's 23 years old and just getting started in Advanced A. As a 2B his numbers are very impressive, but his defense remains a question mark. Melillo has hit non stop as a professional, and until he stops it seems likely that he'll find somewhere to start in the majors some day. Grade: B+

Mike Rogers - 4.41 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 100 hits, 38 walks, 68 k's in 98 innings - Rogers has been a bust, there is no way around it. Interestingly enough there were 2 A's picks in the first 5 rounds in 2004 that I didn't like; Melillo, who I've been dead wrong about, and Rogers who has made me correct in my thinking. The thing so bad about Rogers is he a K:BB of fewer than 2:1 and a K rate under 7:9. For a pitcher who spent 3 seasons in college, he's been terrible in Low A. Nothing suggests that Rogers will ever pitch a major league inning. Grade: F

Ryan Webb - 4.08 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 92 hits, 25 walks, 59 k's in 86 innings - Webb has been pretty decent in his first pro season after high school. More important than his numbers is his velocity. The A's took him with the assumption that he'd add a few MPH in the years after being drafted. I'm unaware of his current velocity, but I know it can't all be there yet with such a poor K rate. Webb's future still very much remains to be seen. Grade: C-

TNIP 7/12/05

I'll have Kane County grades tomorrow. Keep supporting the site any way you can. Tell friends, whatever it may be. Gracias.

Midland, loss 12-3

Andre Ethier - 2 for 3

Jason Perry - 1 for 2, rbi, walk
Omar Quintanilla - 1 for 3
Jason Windsor - 4 innings, 6 earned, 6 hits, 3 walks, 2 k's

Stockton, win 5-4

Kevin Melillo - 1 for 4, rbi
Richie Robnett - 0 for 4, 3 k's
Kurt Suzuki - 1 for 3, run, rbi, walk
Dustin Majewski - 1 for 4, run, 2 k's, double

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Sac and Stockton grades - TNIP below

These grades are based on expected production and actual production. For example, if Barton and Dustin Majewski had the exact same numbers, Majewski would get the higher grade.

Sacramento

John Baker - .252/.313/.368 in 250 AB's. 20 doubles, 3 triples, 1 hr, 21 walks, 56 k's - Baker's numbers are still a little low after getting off to a horrid start because of a contact lense problem, but he's been hitting the ball well for a couple months now. Still though, he's not a good enough defensive catcher to get by with no power at all. It's hard to think Baker hasn't had a bad season thus far. His future is likely in a backup role, maybe a league average back up in his prime. Grade: C-

Mike Rouse - .290/.385/.430 in 307 AB's. 23 doubles, 1 triple, 6 hr's, 45 walks, 67 k's - Rouse has done pretty much what should have been expected from him. I think he was a pretty under rated prospect after last season when he struggled with a couple of injuries. I think he can peak as a starting shortstop somewhere, but his career will likely be spent as a utility player. Grade: B

Dan Meyer - 6.04 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, 53 hits, 22 walks, 27 k's in 44.2 innings - Meyer has obviously had a terrible season, but hopefully all is not lost. Meyer is supposedly back hitting 90 mph after losing velocity with a tierd shoulder earlier in the season. He's been pitching better since his return. If he can get his velocity back to a consistant 90-92, then there is no reason to think he can't be the pitcher the A's thought they traded for. Grade: D

Jairo Garcia - 3.80 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 32 hits, 22 walks in 42.2 innings between Midland and Sacramento - Looking at the numbers Jairo looks pretty bad, but the numbers are a little misleading. Garcia has improved his control a great deal, but is still prone to blow up every so often which inflates his numbers. He still has an amazing K rate and should still have a future as a very good reliever. Grade: C+

Stockton

Dustin Majewski - .269/.356/.471 in 342 AB's. 26 doubles, 2 triples, 13 hr's, 46 walks, 96 k's - Majewski's power has seemingly coming out of nowhere this season, but he's almost 24 and just in Advanced A. Really, he should be hitting the ball well. He is striking out far to much though and will have to cut down on the k's or else he probably wont see any success at higher levels. He's a very good defensive OF'er and seems to be capable of being the 24th or 25th man on a major league roster. Grade: B

Daric Barton - .327/.450/.485 in 311 AB's. 20 doubles, 2 triple, 9 hr's, 64 walks, 51 k's between Stockton and Midland - Barton has been just short of amazing as a 19 year old. His power numbers are slightly lower than expected, but some of that is likely because of the surgery he had at the end of spring training. Barton has knowledge of the strike zone that is unheard of for a 19 year old. There is no reason to doubt that Barton will be an all star in the major leagues. Grade: A-

Kurt Suzuki - .272/.391/.445 in 283 AB's. 17 doubles, 4 triples, 8 hr's, 50 walks, 43 strike outs - Some people may not realize that Suzuki is still just 21 years old, so his numbers for Advanced A are pretty impressive. His average is lower than I thought it would be at this point, but he's shown more power than I expected. Suzuki's major problem this season has been his defense. He has about 10 passed balls to go with about 10 errors. Suzuki right now looks like the A's catcher of the future. He should be able to peak as a better than league average offensive cather. His defense though remains to be seen. Grade: B

Danny Putnam - .289/.380/.457 in 315 AB's. 17 doubles, 3 triples, 10 hr's, 45 walks, 59 k's - Putnam is hitting worse than I expected. His batting average is there, but the expected power is not. He's not much of a defender and as a left fielder he needs to hit the ball with more authroity to make it as a starter. I still think he becomes a major league starter some day, but he really needs to show more slugging. Grade: C+

Richie Robnett - .238/.323/.398 in 256 AB's. 20 doubles, 0 triples, 7 hr's, 33 walks, 85 k's - To me, Robnett has been the biggest offensive disappointment in the system this season. He isn't hitting for power, he isn't hitting for average. All he's doing is striking out. I'm still a huge fan of Robnett, but what's in his future is still anybody's guess. Grade: F

Brad Knox - 4.02 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 48 hits, 15 walks, 46 k's, in 56 innings - Knox started the season a little late after he had some back problems, which may be the reason he started in Stockton and not Midland. Considering his low WHIP and very low HR rate (4 in his 56 innings), his 4.02 ERA seems a little high. His ERA should go down as the season goes on and he may even find himself in Midland by seasons end. I think he can be an innings eater at the back end of a rotation some day. Grade: B-
