TNIP 4/25/05...And a slight rant

The first Oakland A's talk that has been featured on my blog. Why in the world was there not somebody warming up for the A's at the start of the 7th with Zito at almost 100 pitches? It ended up being irrelevant since the A's didn't end up scoring, but Macha's stupidity holds true. Street should have been up at the start of the 7th and could have come in after the Widger home run. Instead, Street didn't even start warming up until Zito was at around 110 pitches, after the home run. Another 2 runs crossed the plate after Zito should have been taken out.ADDED: I forget to mention how the White Sox had action in the pen right when Garland was up to 100 pitches. He was pitching a gem, but it's a just in case sort of thing that Macha failed to do and it cost Zito and the A's 2 runs. Anyways, sorry for the rant, to the night in prospects..

Kane County, win 2-1

Kevin Melillo - 0 for 3, walk, k
Gregorio Petit - 0 for 3, k

Andre Ethier

In 2003, when Ethier was drafted, Baseball America compared him to Shawn Green. He was a rare (at the time) early offensive selection that was loved by scouts. The A's loved him enough to take him in the 2nd round 2 years after taking him in the 37th. Ethier was nothing short of a let down last season. He was decent, but not close to as good as he was expected to be with a lot of K's and little power before his season ended with a cracked vetebre. This year though, has been a different story thus far. At AA-Midland, in 34 AB's, Ethier is hitting .471 with a .514 OBP and .794 SLG, good for a 1.308 OPS. Ethier has loads of potential, his only question mark has been his power. If he can keep hitting for extra bases then he'll be seen as a top prospect shortly.

Kevin Melillo - 1 for 3, walk
Gregorio Petit - 1 for 4, run, rbi, k, hr, error
Ryan Webb - 5 and 1/3 innings, 3 earned, 8 hits, 2 walks, 4 k's

Kevin Melillo

Entering the season I was sure Melillo was going to start in Stockton. A college kid who hit incredibly well in 100 AB's at Vancouver, I thought he'd be ready for it. The A's though, wanted him to start in Low A. Maybe they want to start him slow, or maybe there just isn't any room for him at Stockton right now. I don't think Melillo is leaving any question though that he's ready for Advanced A ball. Small sample size yes, but the SC Gamecock, in 24 AB's, is hitting .458 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, a HR, a .594 OBP and a .833 SLG -- Good for a 1.427 OPS. Right now in Stockton, Luke Appert is starting at 2nd base. No offence to Appert, but it's unlikely that he's in the A's future. A promotion could be coming soon for Melillo, perhaps the first promotion of the year in the A's system.

The Night in Prospects 4/7/05

My original plan was to post TNIP on the ESPN and Scout A's boards while I include notes here. What I may do though is post TNIP for a week or so and then after that post it here exclusively to maxamize the sites hits. The way I'll work it this year inclusion wise is basically include BA's top 30 prospects and maybe a couple others, like Mike Rogers and Dallas Braden. After a month or so, I'll re-evaluate them and see if their worthy of still including. Keep supporting the site.

Sacramento, win 7-0

Dan Johnson - 2 for 4, run, rbi, k, hr
John Baker - 1 for 3, walk, double
Mike Rouse - 1 for 4, 2 k's, double
John Rheinecker - 8 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 3 k's

Midland, loss 4-3

Omar Quintanilla - 0 for 4, error
Jason Perry - 0 for 4
Andre Ethier - 1 for 4, run, k

Notes: Quintanilla remains at short for now.

Stockton, win 4-3

Richie Robnett - 0 for 4, k
Kurt Suzuki - 0 for 3, walk, 2 k's, error
Daric Barton - 1 for 2, run, walk, hbp
Danny Putnam - 1 for 4, 2 runs, double
Jason Windsor - 3 innings, 2 earned, 3 hits, walk, 4 k's

Kane County, win 7-4

The Day Before Opening Day

For most of the minor league teams, A's #1 prospect Nick Swisher hits 2 bombs against Baltimore. This is after Swisher had a single and a very hard hit ball on Monday. For all the crap that was talked about Swisher during spring 1) Nobody seemed to realize it was only sprng and as often as not spring stats turn out 100% irrelevant. 2) Swisher actually started to hit very well towrds the end of spring. Your AL ROY 4 days into the season? Nick Swisher

Tomorrow I'll start my Night in Prospect report on the ESPN and Scout A's boards. I'll link up this site at the bottom for more in depth analysis. On the boards I'll give just what every player did -- Here I'll keep notes. Also, this will be the only place on earth (to my knowledge) that will be able to give you split stats for A's minor leaguers.

Dallas Braden

The rosters have been announced for both Kane County and Stockton. One minor surprise is that Kevin Melillo will start at Kane County. The major surprise is that Dallas Braden is not on either roster right now. Does that mean the 21 year old 2004 24th round pick will start in AA-Midland? I can't think of any player that has done something similar.

Javier Herrera

Well, turns out the A's highest ceiling prospect has been juicing. Herrera, as well as 37 other minor leaguers, including 4 other A's, tested positive for steroids. Herrera will be suspended for 15 games as this is his first offense. One has to wonder how much of his breakout 2004 had to do with steroids. Hopefully not at all. I would think he was tested last season as well and he obviously wasn't suspended so that's at least a good sign. Catcher David Castillo was also suspended and as a 3rd time offender will miss 60 games.

This is certainly bad news. Couple this with Alexi Ogando's VISA troubles and the A's high ceiling Latin prospects are certainly in question.
