Trade Zito Week: Day 2
Scenario 6:
Barry Zito to the San Diego Padres
Scott Linebrink, Xavier Nady and Tim Stuaffer to the Oakland Athletics
This deal gives the A's 3 players that can help in 2006. Linebrink is an outstanding reliever, Nady could force Payton out of town and Stauffer has the stuff to step in and replace Zito right away. The Padres may not want to move Linebrink if they're going to lose Hoffman, but they can use a pitcher like Barry Zito and I'm sure they'd love having Zito as he is from the area. The Padres can stand to lose Nady because they just refuse to make room for him and they can lose Stauffer if they have Zito to step into the rotation.
The Good:
The A's get a lot of help right now
The A's do Zito the favor of sending him home
The Bad:
Linebrink is already arbitration eligible
Unless I'm mistaken, Scott Boras is Nady's agent
There are question marks around Stauffer after he bombed in AAA after being demoted from SD.
The Verdict:
The contract status of Linebrink and the fear of future contract status of Nady would hold the A's back on this one. Stauffer has potential but too many question marks. A more sure thing of a replacement for Zito could probably be found elsewhere.

Payton > Nady. I dont like this trade one bit. Why would you want to force Payton out of town anyway.

Nady is not only likely to be better than Payton, but he'd be about 1/8 the price

Paytons defense>>>>>>>Nadys defense. Plus Paytons lifetime #s are better than Nadys in EVERY category. Yea he's cheaper but he is not better.

Payton is at an age that will see him get worse with age. Nady will get better with age, not to mention consistant PT.

While getting a great reliever would be nice, I really don't think its a priority. We are already have Street, Witasick, Duke, Calero, Kennedy, Flores and maybe Garica if he's ready. Its not a great bullpen, but definitely not out most glaring need. What we really need is a couple of good to excellent hitters and maybe a pitcher to replace Zito if we trade him.

Nady's going to be 27 next year. I think he's reached his peak. Try another piece other than Nady.

Nady entering his 27 year old season is more of a reason to trade for him. He's just now ready to hit his prime

People have been saying that 27 is past prime, but if that is so, when is someone actually in their prime? I always thought it was in the early 30's. Correcting me if I'm wrong though.

I'd consider the average prime years to be 27-30. Beyond that you'll likely see guys go downhill.

Nady's now a Met!

Hmmm, Petit, Heilman, Seo, and Nady for Zito?
